arcenciel aided in the relief efforts by gathering shattered glass, which resulted from the port of Beirut blast on the 4th of August 2020. Thousands of tons of glass and construction waste ended up on the streets of Beirut without a proper disposal method. Facing this situation, arcenciel decided to secure a land plot, with the help of Beirut municipality, to store, sort and process the glass collected and dropped off by citizens and companies.
The project launched in Beirut has the potential to become a nationwide initiative as no local industrial scale solution for glass waste are currently available in Lebanon. The material recovery of the glass will allow the possible rehabilitation of several quarries located across Lebanon in addition to the creation of sustainable green jobs from collection personnel, to sorting and processing of the glass.
The approach suggested will in addition of directly serving the beneficiaries affected by the explosion, provide the Lebanese community with long term efficient solution for glass management and contribute to the reduction of the household and industrial waste sent to dumpsites and landfill.
