Restoring Beirut’s Historical Buildings

2021-03-04

As part of its culture program, arcenciel has been interested in the country’s vernacular architecture, and has done a great deal of work on the earthen architecture of the Bekaa Plain, organized training camps and published construction manuals.

arcenciel has put its expertise at the service of safeguarding the architecture of Beirut following the terrible devastation caused by the explosion of August 4, 2020. According to the DGA (General Directorate of Antiquities) 600 historic buildings had been affected and 60 of them were in imminent danger of collapse. It was therefore necessary to make a commitment, which the association did by specializing in the restoration of the wooden arches which were pulverized by the explosion. This commitment in the field is accompanied by the publication of a restoration manual and by the training of young people in carpentry work in order to give them the chance to find a job and to participate, through this, in the preservation of the environment, historic city and its identity.
